Friday, October 24

  • 1–3:30 p.m. – Observe your Student’s Tutorial, Various Classrooms: Selected tutors have offered to have parents observe their classes. Please ask your student to confirm with their tutors if the tutorials they are leading this Friday afternoon are good classes in which to have observers.
  • 2–5 p.m. – Check-In: Pick-up your printed schedule and nametags and sig up for Saturday’s student-led tutorials in the Mellon Hall Lobby.
  • 3–4:15 p.m. – Library Open House: Want to see where students spend much of their time? Tour the beautiful Greenfield Library and hear from library staff about the many resources available to your student. While you are there, be sure to check out the Rare Book Room and learn about these historical books! The library is also open on Saturday from 12–6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to midnight if you would like to explore on your own.
  • 3:30–5 p.m. — Edensword Bookstore and Coffee Shop Sitting Area Open: Stop by the terrace level of Edensword Hall to visit the bookstore and have a seat in the coffee shop.
  • 7 p.m. — First-Year Chorus Concert, Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium: Parents are invited to hear selections from the First-Year Chorus.
  • 7:30 p.m. — Friday Night Lecture & Question Period, Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium:

Saturday, October 25

  • 9–11:30 a.m. — Check-In: Pick up your printed schedule and name tags and sign up for this afternoon’s student-led Tutorials. Mellon Hall Lobby.
  • 9:30–10:30 a.m. — President’s Welcome: Join President Paalman in the Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium for an update on the current state and future of St. John’s College. This session will be based upon topics suggested by parents.
  • 11 a.m.–12 p.m. — Career Development Panel: Hear from current students, recent and a former student about how Johnnies can take advantage of summer internship and fellowship opportunities available to all students in Mellon Hall FSK Auditorium.
  • 12:45–1:15 p.m. – Reading the Ptolemy Stone: Learn from Brendon Lasell, Tutor, how to measure the angle of the sun compared to the earth using a Ptolemy Stone. Some of Ptolemy’s work is examined at the beginning of the first semester in sophomore mathematics. Meet at the Ptolemy Stone - along the walkway parallel to the Mitchell Museum.
  • 1:30–2:40 p.m. — Student-led Tutorials: Experience a Tutorial, where a piece of art will be observed and discussed. All tutorials will explore the same work of art and will occur in classrooms in Mellon Hall. Families and friends will sign up to join a specific classroom during on-site check-in. Please join your classmates in the Tutorial room you selected.
  • 2:30–4 p.m. — Family & Friends Mixer/Student Club Expo: Enjoy light fare and beverages on the Mellon Walkway and Patio. Meet other families and interact with some of the student-run clubs on campus.
  • 6–9 p.m. — “Sailing under the Stars”: The Hodson Boathouse staff and the St. John’s Sailing team would like to invite you down to the banks of College Creek. Students and family are all welcome for some stargazing as well as refreshments (s’mores!) back on shore. Lifejackets will be provided on a first come, first serve basis and we will rotate through the PFDs as folks come off the water. We plan to make use of almost all our vessels in the boathouse! Please feel free to reach out to Rachel Fleming (rachel.fleming(at)sjc.edu) or John Wagner (john.wagner(at)sjc.edu) our Boathouse Manager, with any questions.
  • 7:30–9 p.m. — Observing the Night Sky: Gather near the Planetarium with the Astronomy Assistant to survey and discuss the night sky (telescopes will be provided and surrounding lights turned off).
  • 8–11 p.m. — Contra Dance: Please join us in the Great Hall of McDowell to learn contra steps as a student calls the dance. First-time dancers of all ages are very much encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Sunday, October 26

  • 10–11:30 a.m. – (+ USNA option): “Join your period-attired guide for stories of historic Annapolis and a visit to the Maryland State House with the option to continue on to the U.S. Naval Academy.”
  • 1:30 p.m.–2:45 p.m. — : “Distinguished as a National Historic Landmark, the Maryland State House is a treasure in the city of Annapolis. Join your period-attired guide on a 75-minute tour to explore one of the most historic and architecturally significant state houses in the nation.”
